Inspiration & Design
I love to crochet. So far all of my designs have been crocheted. But, I am also a knitter. In fact, I learned to knit when I was very young and it’s only been in the past few years that I’ve been crocheting more than knitting.
And I do love crochet but sometimes you see something that is knit and you wish you could recreate it using just your hook! This was me whenever I saw a long, oversize, chunky scarf knit up in garter stitch.
Crochet that looks like knit is very popular and there are lots of great stitches or techniques to use to get similar effects to knitting.
I found one such stitch pattern in one of my stitch dictionaries – a crocheted two row repeat that looks really like knit garter stitch. Hurray!
I grabbed my super bulky, chunky yarn and immediately started to swatch! And here we have the finished result – The Denim Drift chunky crochet scarf.

Quick Crochet
Firstly, this modern, chunky scarf pattern is a quick crochet project. The super bulky yarn and large hook size mean that this scarf can be off your hook in no time!
Relaxing
Secondly, this is the perfect project to complete while watching your favourite TV program or catching up with your Podcasts because of the easy, repetitive stitch pattern!
Customise
Finally, this is a great project to customise to your own personal colour choice. Like the Glass Pebble Scarf, I can see this looking lovely in so many different shades.

The Yarn
I used the super popular and widely available Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. Perfect for a warm, chunky scarf!
I think there is possibly whatever colour you could want within this range but here are a few that I think would look great for this project. The denim shade that I used is top left.

The pattern includes some substitute yarn recommendations or you could use yarnsub.com to help you find an alternative.
Pin this chunky crochet scarf for later!

9in / 23cm wide
78in / 198cm long
SKILL LEVEL:

PATTERN NOTES:
I chose to stitch into the bottom bump of the foundation chain.
Starting chains do not count as stitches.
Work the slip stitch row very loosely so that these stitches are not too tight to work into on the following row.
ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):
Ch – chain
Hdc – half double crochet
Sl stBLO – slip stitch back loop only (see special stitches)
St – stitch
< > – stitch count
SPECIAL STITCHES:
Sl stBLO instead of inserting your hook through both loops that make up the top ‘v’ of the stitch, you will insert your hook through only the arm of the “v” that is furthest away from you (the arm that is at the “back” of the work). Insert your hook into the back loop, yarn over, pull up a loop and draw through the loop on your hook (one loop left on your hook).
PATTERN:
(US Terms)
SETUP Ch 17 (16 st + 1 turning ch).
ROW1 Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across, turn. <16>
ROW2 Ch 1, sl stBLO in first hdc, sl stBLO in each hdc across, turn. <16>
ROW3 Ch 1, hdc in first st and in each st across, turn. <16>
Repeat rows two and three 68 times more (139 rows in total), or until the scarf measures 78”.
FINISHING Weave in ends and block.
