Inspiration & Design
There have been a lot of oversize scarves in the shops recently. As makers I know we always think: I can make that! What better way to keep warm on chilly days than to wrap up in the long scarf you have crocheted yourself?
I wanted a scarf that was big and soft but not too bulky or heavy when worn. And I definitely wanted the scarf to have lots of lovely drape. Crocheted fabric can often be stiff so if I wanted to use a bulky yarn I would need to be careful about the rest of the design.
I chose King Cole Big Value Poplar Chunky yarn. To get the drape I wanted I decided to pick a stitch pattern that would give some movement to the fabric. If possible I would also go up a crochet hook size (or two).
After trying a few different options, I chose a simple, single crochet stitch pattern that involves chains and skipping stitches. The chain spaces help to keep the material light and soft.
The recommended hook size for this yarn is 6mm. So I swatched with this size, a 7mm and an 8mm hook. I loved the airy, squishy stitches that the 8mm hook made.
Beginner Friendly
This long scarf pattern is very beginner friendly. So if you can make chains and single crochet stitches you are all set!
Mindless Crochet
This is the perfect project to complete while binge-watching your favourite TV program because of the easy, repetitive stitch pattern! And although this is a long scarf, the skipped single crochet stitches and chunky yarn mean that it grows quickly.
Different Sizes
Maybe you don’t want the scarf to be as wide or as long? Notes are included to adjust the pattern to the size that’s right for you.

The Yarn
I used the affordable, acrylic yarn King Cole Big Value Poplar Chunky in colour Meadow Mist.
This yarn is machine washable and comes in six different colours that all have a subtle marble-effect shade. I seriously love this muted colour palette and am already planning my next project with a different shade!

I love this yarn (have I mentioned that already?). It is acrylic but it is so soft. So. Soft!
