Inspiration & Design
Have you heard of Fibershare? Basically, it’s an international yarn swap that was started in 2015. You’re matched with two people. One that you send yarn to, as well as one that will send yarn to you.
I loved this idea and signed up as soon as I heard about it. It was really fun to choose yarn and notions for someone, trying to find out what they would like. And in return, I received the most amazing, thoughtfully curated box of yarn, patterns and maker gifts! It was emotional!
Included in this box of yarny goodness was a beautiful ball of velvet yarn, along with a pattern for an adorable star-shaped cushion. Here is an Instagram post of my finished make.
Once I’d finished my cushion, I had just under 50g of yarn left and so I neatly wound it up to keep for something special.
I then came across pictures of lovely velvet ribbons being worn as hair accessories and neck-ties on one of my many, many Pinterest browsing sessions. The perfect project idea for my leftover velvet yarn!
Beginner Friendly
Firstly, this simple, crochet ribbon pattern is perfect for beginners. Like the Sage & Blush Wallhanging, if you can single crochet, you are all set to begin.
Quick
Secondly, if you’re looking to crochet something quickly for yourself, for a gift or to sell at a craft fayre or maker’s market this pattern is perfect.
Versatile
Thirdly, this velvet hair ribbon is a lovely versatile crochet accessory. Wear it as a headband, a neck-tie, a hair scarf or tie it around your favourite bag.
Stitch From Your Stash
Finally, you don’t have to use a velvet yarn for this project. Experiment with different yarn from your stash! I think I’ll stop there with the reasons to get this pattern on your hook!
The Yarn
I used the beautiful, 100% polyester yarn, Bernat Velvet in the shade Gray Vapor.
I have to say crocheting with this yarn does take a bit of practice. I’ve never used any yarn with this kind of texture and construction before.
So, my advice would be to try a little sample square first as a practice. Sometimes it feels as if you are crocheting on instinct as the loops can be tricky to identify. In my opinion, it’s totally worth the little extra effort.
I mean, look at a selection of my favourite shades! A lovely mix of neutrals, pastels and jewel-tones.
The pattern includes some substitute yarn recommendations or you could use yarnsub.com to help you find an alternative.
